June 1st – WCS Donut Day!

donut day

It’s Donut Day at West Coast Swing Calgary! In 1917, during WW1, 250 volunteers began serving donuts to soldiers in “Huts” near the front lines in France. By 1937, Donut Day became an annual morale-boosting and fundraising means of offering these sweet treats and raising money for much needed essentials for the troops.

Though the origin of the donut is unclear, it is known that the iconic look started making an appearance in the United States in the mid-1800’s. Rumor has it a gentleman by the name of Hanson Gregory invented them, out of a distaste for the undercooked centers. His solution was said to be punching a hole in the center with a tin pepper box.

Let’s find OUR center this Friday at WCS Calgary! (Timbits may be involved 😁)
